Conceiving Contraception: The Development of the Pill in the U.S.

At a near 100% effectiveness rate, the practicality and efficacy of the pill makes it popular amongst women today in preventing pregnancy. Surviving deep debates and divisions, as well as social and legislative resistance since its origins, access to the pill did not come until 1960. The fight for the pill has been long-running and concerns about its adverse effects continue to bleed into modern times. From Margaret Sanger's first dip into the birth control movement in 1914 to the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022, the struggle for reproductive justice and women's bodily autonomy is ceaseless and certainly does not stop with the distribution of the pill.
